Exploring Our Relationship with Nature: A Creative Workshop Series

Our project explores the central question: How is our relationship with nature connected to the roles we play in society?

Western binary thinking has historically positioned nature (irrational) as the opposite of humans (rational), reinforcing hierarchies of control. This dualistic perspective not only

shaped human-nature relations but also contributed to exploitative systems,

environmental crises, and gender stereotypes— associating femininity with passivity and emotion, and masculinity with dominance and rationality.

What happens when we break away from this binary mindset and see nature as an integral part of ourselves rather than something external? Through this project, we aim to rediscover the nature within us and explore how shifting perspectives can reshape our understanding of identity and belonging.

Using plants as a starting point, we examine our connection to nature and society. This approach invites participants to reflect on their roles in the world and how gendered stereotypes shape our interactions with nature.

Workshop Phases (Fall 2023):

Into Nature: Exploring our surroundings to develop a deeper connection, moving beyond colonial ideas that position humans as mere observers of nature.

  1. Stories & Narratives: Engaging in storytelling, drawing, printing, and crafting in a creative studio atmosphere to break down barriers between humans, nature, and societal classifications.

  2. Co-Creating a Book: Children will actively shape the content, form, and design of a final book featuring their stories and artwork from the workshops.

This project fosters creativity while helping children build a meaningful connection to nature and develop a broader understanding of the world around them.
