ICH IN DER GRUPPE 2021-2022

ME IN THE GROUP - Master Project A participatory artistic project on group dynamics and individuality among Syrian women in exile.

"Me in the Group" is a series of artistic workshops conducted in exile with Syrian migrant women who are, or have been, active in various organizations. These women were also involved in conceptualizing and implementing the workshops. During the sessions, we exchanged stories, memories, and both positive and negative experiences, discussing the challenges, difficulties, and successes related to teamwork and collaboration.

At the same time, we expressed our individuality within the group by designing and creating our own stamps using the linocut technique. The workshops aimed to provide Syrian women with the opportunity to share their personal stories.

Additionally, the project encouraged strategies that supported the women in recognizing, solidifying, and expressing their individuality, emphasizing it practically through art.

The overarching goal was to spark a process of self-healing through art and dialogue while fostering solidarity and mutual support among women. Furthermore, the project sought to empower Syrian women and promote their participation in social and political life.

Year: 2022.

The outcomes of the workshops were documented in an artistic brochure (21.5 cm x 16 cm x 180 cm), which included the stamps created by each woman alongside the personal reasons behind their designs. The brochure also featured phrases mentioned by the women during the workshops, written in Arabic, Kurdish, or German.

ICH TAR Performance - 2020

Nagham Hamoush's performance ICH TAR draws on a reference to the Mesopotamian goddess depicted on the Ishtar Gate to connect the artists own struggles against an unjust social reality with the mythological image of woman as deity. Hamoush's work speaks of the schisms experienced by women who immigrated from the Middle East and find themselves between two patriarchal worlds: the society in which they grew up and that constructs the notion of their supposed oppression, and the society that these women joined as immigrants and that again projects distortions onto them.

In a performative ritual, the artist pulled apart and dissolved those projections and obstacles that hinder her freedom and self-actualisation, to assert herself as an independent woman and take up the divine role of woman leader again.
